das Riesenrad (-räder) Ferris wheel, giant wheel
Das London Eye, das größste Riesenrad der Welt, ist doppelt so hoch wie das Riesenrad auf dem Wiener Prater.
The London Eye, the largest Ferris wheel in the world, is twice as large as the Ferris wheel in Vienna's Prater (amusement park).
Note: The London Eye was built on the south bank of the Thames for the millennium celebration. Originally intended as a temporary attraction, the giant wheel (135 meters tall) recently celebrated its fifth year and carries 10,000 guests each day, offering them a panoramic view of nearby Big Ben and all of London from its 32 glass-enclosed gondolas. The Prater Riesenrad (64 meters) in Vienna was constructed in 1897 for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Kaiser Franz Josef's reign. It was designed by the English engineer Walter Basset. Originally it had 30 Waggons (cabins) but currently has only 15, each of which can carry up to 12 passengers and can also be rented for parties or special occasions. Damaged in World War II, the Riesenrad was reconstructed and put back into service in 1947. In 2002 new amber-colored exterior lighting was added. Vienna's giant wheel was featured in the classic film THE THIRD MAN (1949).
