Reichsmark 2
1923 20 Million-Reichsmark Banknote with Fraktur Typeface
The German economic system underwent serious problems following the First World War. Prices had doubled during the war (1914-1918), but when right-wing fanatics assassinated the German foreign minister, Walter Rathenau, on June 24, 1922 the public's confidence in the German government was shaken. Prices more than doubled in just a five-month period in 1922. A beer that had cost less than six marks soon went for 18 Reichmarks. The government's failure to recognize the problem only made things worse. A cup of coffee that cost 5,000 marks on Monday could go for 14,000 on Tuesday. The government was soon forced to print banknotes in bigger and bigger denominations, including this one for 100 million marks.
