Interview: Tarzan's Son, Johnny Weissmuller, Jr.

Friday May 19, 2006
During his lifetime, Johnny Weissmuller, the world's most famous movie Tarzan and champion swimmer, always claimed that he had been born in the U.S. Some reference works to this day incorrectly list Windber, Pennsylvania as Weismuller's birthplace. But "Tarzan" knew that he had been born in a small town in Austria-Hungary (Romania today) to parents of Austrian heritage. His original family name was Weiszmüller. For Olympic reasons, he and his mother created the myth that he had been born in America. In this interview with Weissmuller's only son, we learn that neither Johnny Weissmuller, Jr. nor Tarzan's five wives knew the secret. Johnny junior only discovered the truth while doing research for his book Tarzan, My Father. Learn more in this Interview with Johnny Weissmuller, Jr. (germanhollywood.com)
