German Kino Plus - Movies in German via DISH Network

DISH Network's German television offering has just gotten a lot better! As of May 3, 2007 the German Kino Plus 24-hour movie channel is now part of the German Language Package on the DISH satellite service in the United States. - From the GKP Web site: "GKP will feature recent theatrical films from the highly acclaimed German film scene, classics from Germany's cinematic past, television programs including the highly acclaimed Tatort series, and documentaries that will include history and travel."
As usual, DISH subscribers are the last people to learn about this new channel. I learned about it by accident. Even if you go to the German Package page on the DISH Web site, you won't see the new German movie channel unless you click on the "A LA CARTE" button! But I called the DISH 800 number and had the channel live in just a few minutes. If you already are a subscriber to the German Package, the German Kino Plus channel is only an additional $8.00 per month. The GKP channel can also be ordered alone for $14.99/month. (See the GKP or DISH sites for more.)
By the way, the DW-TV programming on DISH has also been improved! In addition to the usual news and cultural programs, DW-TV added several German talk shows (from ARD and ZDF) in May. If you want to know about the DISH German Package, see my article: German TV in North America.

DW-TV is starting to look more and more like the old satellite channel “German TV” (pre-2006) with all of the extra ARD and ZDF content! I think it’s great.
Comcast & TimeWarner cable platforms would open the market to the majority of viewers in USA, however, without advertising, no market exists as in the case of former ‘’Channel D,, & ‘’GermanTV,,. Now that ARD/ZDF/WDR u.A. is here in USA in ,,Echtzeit'’ per iptv, SATEINS/PROSIEBEN better hurry up and provide a GermanTV-like channel in its offerings at no extra charge. iptv has 10 “real” channels broadcast live for 20 bucks per month.
I wrote to DW-TV to ask them to make German substitles available for hard of hearing subscribers. I believe they must have misunderstood because I received a very snooty letter in return telling me that German TV is for the GERMAN audience and they had no need to put ENGLISH subtitles.
Come on people, there ARE deaf German’s for goodness sake. zum Beispiel, meine Mutter.
Also, I speak German, but not fluently, and it would help me a lot!
I pay for 10 online German TV channels for 20 bucks a month, BUT only 8 actually work. Neither ARD nor ZDF work, NEVER HAVE! I do receive 3sat, Phoenix, zdfDOKU & einsFESTIVAL, WDR, and MDR with decent quality. DSF shows mostly crappy porn ads and KiKA is off the air after 6pm EST. These 2 channels are indeed worthless! I’m working with the provider to fix the ARD problem and
….I’ll keep you posted…

It would have been so great, if Dish Network wasn’t such a cheat. First of all, German Kino Plus is part of the German Language PLUS package but not the German Language package. Second, it turns out that you can have only ONE premium language package (even though I could never find this info before). They let me sign the contract for German plus package and Israeli Platinium, but when they send me the bill, the programs were charges separately. It’s not hard to guess that it came out to much more than I expected!
Also, I won’t say much about very rude customer service (especially managers), repeating “we always keep the right to change prices without notice”. That’s a whole other story.
However, this remark means that they have the right to charge you suddenly $1000 without prior notice (I asked directly). BE AWARE, if you consider dealing with them.
RECAP IPTV: July 2007 I told you 10 online German t.v.channels minus ARD & ZDF. Now ARD & ZDF ARE WORKING! You need 3mb dsl to make this work. Not HD, ok. Porn still kills DSF sports, kids channel mostly signed off.
Germany time minus 6hrs=Florida time, I work til 6pm here missing primetime. Every hour reboot laptop (unnerving).
Picture pixelates a lot. Hoping to see 24hr news (N24) and series sender (vox)added soon;I’m burned out on all those anti-american documentaries and commie Sovjet styled Berlin politik shows. Still cheaper than Dish and works in pouring rain. Also www.lindenstrasse.de
lets you watch last 5 weeks’ episodes free. scot
To Whom It May Concern;
As much as we enjoy German Kino Plus playing the same shows 15 and more times over is a little to much. There has to be other shows that you can play without repeating them over and over again. This is not what the customer is paying for.
Thank you for your time and we will be looking for a schedule change in the near future.
Sincerely,
G. Vasinder
G. Vasbinder is right.
I am tied also of watching the same Programs and movies on GKP over and over.
I think you could bring us better programs, or else I have to change my Network.
Sincerely
U.Harms
I’m also very disappointed with the german selection and the constant repeats. Then you show a good movie and we’ll never know the ending because it was cut off early, twice!
I’m getting rid of it.
