Konrad Zuse and the First Programmable Computer

In 1941 the German engineer Konrad Zuse invented the world's first binary programmable computer. Today Zuse's Z3 computer is recognized as a key milestone in the development of modern computing. Zuse also developed Plankalkül, the world's first universal computer programming language. Years before the huge ENIAC and other early U.S. computers, Zuse had invented a relatively compact, powerful computer, despite the huge difficulties of wartime conditions in Germany.
