The Amazon river system (largely in Brazil) contains two thirds of all the fresh water flowing in all of the rivers on earth. But this massive and vitally important ecosystem is in danger. The once isolated region is increasingly being negatively impacted by humans.
The Rio Amazonas (Portuguese) is usually ranked as the world's second longest river (see World Rivers), but depending on which rivers one considers as its source, some geographers rank it number one, ahead of the Nile. The Amazon has over 10,000 tributaries (Nebenflüsse), 17 of them longer than Germany's Rhine River.
