Almanach > World Mountains > Everest > More Mountains

Everyone agrees that Mount Everest is the world's tallest mountain (der höchste Berg der Welt). But there is less agreement about exactly how tall this Himalayan peak is. The height of the world's highest peak has been in dispute since satellite measurements in 1987 calculated Everest's height at 29,864 ft (9103 m). The National Geographic Society still uses an earlier figure of 29,028 ft (8846 m), calculated by the Indian government in 1954. When the mountain was first scaled by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953, the height was considered to be 29,002 ft. (1 m = 3.281 ft, 1 foot = 0.3048 m).

The mountain was named for Sir George Everest (1790-1866), an English surveyor, methematician and geodist, in 1863. Everest did important work related to accurately calculating earth measurements, and he also did the first accurate survey of the Indian subcontinent.

The first attempt to climb Everest was made in 1922. After more unsuccessful attempts in 1924, 1933, 1936, 1938 and 1952, a party led by Edmund Hillary reached the summit in 1954. Swiss (1956) and US expeditions (1963) later reached the summit, but the first men to conquer the mountain without supplemental oxygen (1978) were two German-speaking Italians: Reinhold Messner (aus Südtirol) and P. Habeler. (See the Messner chat interview link below.)
