The Mississippi river (the "Father of Waters") is the longest in North America. The Mississippi flows 3,780 km (approximately 2,348 mi; its exact length is difficult to measure) from Lake Itasca in northern Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico (Golf von Mexiko) below New Orleans. On its journey, the river carries eight times more water than the Rhine (der Rhein) from 31 states and two Canadian provinces, a watershed (die Wasserscheide) comprising about an eighth of North America. The river's name probably comes from the Ojibwa words for "great" (mis) and "river" (sipi).
Some geographers classify the Mississippi-Missouri-Red Rock as the world's third longest river. The Mississippi and its two main tributaries (Nebenflüsse) have a total length of 5970 km (3710 mi). The Missouri River alone flows 3726 km (2315 mi) before it meets the Mississippi.
