World Mountains
Berge der Welt

Some of the world's tallest
mountains and mountain ranges

The following chart indicates the German and English names for some of the world's tallest peaks and mountain ranges. Most mountain names are masculine (der), but there are some exceptions (die Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak). Mountain ranges tend to be das because the German word for range is das Gebirge, but there are also exceptions here (der Harz). See "Mountain Ranges" below.

Most of the taller mountains on earth (over 22,000 ft / 6700 m) are in the Himalayas in Asia (Everest, K2, etc.) and in South America (Andes). By contrast, even the highest peaks in the Alps (die Alpen) are mere hills. The highest Alpine peak, (der) Mont Blanc (France/Italy) only reaches 15,771 ft (4807 m). For German and other European mountains not listed below, see European Mountains in German.
