Der Wienfluß-Kanal: After we descended the spiral staircase from the kiosk shown in the previous photo, we enter Vienna's sewers. What you see here (and also in the movie) is the underground Kanal for the Vienna River (Wienfluß), which flows into the Danube Canal. This section of the Wien only has sewage in it when the water level is very high (i.e., during heavy rains). Compare this photo with a scene from the film: Im Kanal.
