Wernher von Braun was born on March 23, 1912 in Wirsitz (then in Germany, now in Polen). In Germany he was interested in rockets and worked on rocket projects. During World War II he headed the rocket testing facility at Peenemünde. Von Braun was a member of the German team that developed the first self-guided liquid-fuel rocket, the A4 (V2). In 1945 the Americans brought him and many of his co-workers to the USA, and von Braun later worked for NASA where he was responsible for the development of the first American earth satellite ("Explorer I") as well as the Saturn rockets. As head of the American space program in the '60s, he played a big part in the success of the Apollo moon mission. Wernher von Braun died in Alexandria, Virginia in 1977.
