DIN DIN, Deutsches Institut für Normung
(DIN, German Institute for Standardization)
DIN, a German non-profit association founded in 1917, establishes and maintains technical standards for all sorts of products - from paper to electronics. DIN, also called Deutsche Industrie-Norm (German Industrial Standard) sets standards that are usually the same as ISO (International Standards Organization). For example, DIN paper sizes (A, B and C formats; see "paper") are the same as ISO, and are based on a proportion of 1:1.4142 (square root of 2), which means half sheets always maintain the same proportion as a full sheet.

NOTE: The second floor in the US is the first floor in Europe. The first floor above the ground is considered the "first" floor, not the second. Keep this in mind when using the elevator in a German office building! The ground floor button is marked "E" (for Erdgeschoss) or "P" (for Parterre). The second floor is "1"!
