Barometric Pressure - Isobars

The isobars (black lines) on this weather map of Europe and the Mediterranean show the barometric pressure in hectopascals (hPa), which used to be called millibars. A high pressure zone has a barometric pressure over 1015 hPa, a low is under that figure. In Europe and most of the world outside the U.S., barometric pressure is measured in hectopascals, not in inches of mercury. In the International System of measurements, the unit of pressure is the Pascal, named for Blaise Pascal (1623-1662). Normal air pressure at sea level is 1013.25 hPa or 29.92 inches of mercury. To convert between inches of mercury and hectopascals/millibars, one hPa is equal to 0.02953 inches of mercury. - Isobar: A line on a map connecting points having equal barometric pressure at a reference altitude (usually sea level) at a certain time or period of time.
