MP3 Audio Compression
Germany's Fraunhofer Institut für Integrierte Schaltungen (IIS, Institute for Integrated Circuits) and its MP3 development team members Karlheinz Brandenburg, Bernhard Grill and Harald Popp were honored with the German Zukunftspreis 2000 ("Future Prize") during ceremonies at the Expo 2000 in Hanover, Germany. Led by Prof. Brandenburg, the Fraunhofer team developed the world-famous process of music data file compression known as MP3, the short term for "Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG) audio layer 3." A newer version known as MPEG layer 4 (MP4) is already in development.
German Federal President Johannes Rau presented the 500,000-mark award to the Fraunhofer team, a relatively small sum compared to the estimated one billion dollars of revenue that MP3 accessories have generated worldwide to date. The huge success of the MP3 process is due to the fact that it can reduce a binary music data file to one-twelfth of its original size, making it practical to download music on the Internet over normal phone lines. MP3 can also be used for spoken audio, audio books, or Hörspiele (radio plays).
The MP3 audio compression format itself is perfectly legal. It's how it was being used by Napster and other online music databanks that led to court battles over alleged copyright infringements.

Zukunftspreis 2000 für MP3-Erfinder
Der Deutsche Zukunftspreis 2000 ging an die Erfinder des Datenformats MP3, das Musik vor der Datenübertragung komprimiert. Bundespräsident Johannes Rau überreichte die mit einer halben Million Mark dotierte Auszeichnung am Donnerstagabend auf der Expo in Hannover an Professor Karlheinz Brandenburg (Ilmenau/Thüringen). Mit ihm wurden Bernhard Grill und Harald Popp geehrt.Die innovative Technik hatte vom Fraunhofer-Institut für integrierte Schaltungen im fränkischen Erlangen aus ihren Siegeszug um die Welt angetreten. Mit ihr können Musikdateien so stark komprimiert werden, dass sie sich in Hifi-Qualität über das Internet verschicken lassen.
Mit MP3 werden Musikdateien über eine Telefonleitung übertragen - und das zwölf Mal schneller als normal. Die Musiksignale werden dabei auf einen Bruchteil der ursprünglichen Datenmenge reduziert. Nach Schätzungen Brandenburgs werden mit MP3-Geräten rund zwei Milliarden Mark Umsatz gemacht.
