Berlin & Beyond

San Francisco - January

Featuring "new films from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland," the San Francisco Berlin & Beyond Film Festival is held each January at the Castro Theatre in association with the Goethe Institute San Francisco, the Consulates General of Germany and Switzerland, and the Austrian Cultural Institute, New York.

In 2002 for the first time, the "Berlin & Beyond" festival featured additional screenings outside San Francisco — at Point Arena near Mendocino, and that has continued in recent years. Other past B&Bs have included a newly restored version of Ernst Lubitsch's 1919 silent classic Madame Dubarry and live appearances by German director Doris Dörrie. Her films have also been featured in San Francisco, including Erleuchtung garantiert (1999), Bin ich schön?, Mitten ins Herz and Nackt (2001).

The opening night film in 2003 was Nirgendwo in Afrika (Nowhere in Africa), Germany's 2003 entry for a foreign language Oscar. For 2008, the 13th annual B&B Film Festival (Jan. 10-16) features a tribute to the German actor Ulrich Mühe (The Lives of Others), who died in 2007.

Berlinale

Berlin - February

The Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) takes place in February. Generally ranked number two in the world after Cannes, Berlin features some 250 films playing in 15 theaters. The 50th Berlinale in 2000 took place in the new Potsdamer Platz complex for the first time. The 58th Berlinale runs from February 7 to 17, 2008. AFI Fest

Los Angeles - November

The AFI Fest is held each November in Hollywood. The 2002 AFI Fest introduced a new and improved venue at the Arclight Hollywood cinema complex on Sunset Boulevard. Most of the screenings now take place at this state-of-the-art complex with 15 theaters, including the historic Cinerama dome.

The AFI Fest showcases German and other foreign films. The "Made in Germany" series runs in cooperation with the Export Union of German Cinema. See our reviews of some of the German-language films featured at AFI Fest.
