German Film Permission • 2005-06 Your High School

• Parents are asked to read the following information, sign below and return the completed form to Mr./Ms. German Teacher.

German Language Films in the Classroom
Several times during the school year, the German classes will view feature-length German films. These are theatrical release films on video. Most are shown in the original language with English subtitles, while a few are without subtitles.
We show these films to give students exposure to the language and culture they are studying. They do not just watch these films passively, but are expected to answer questions and be able to discuss the films. Any film shown is chosen for its educational value, and most are award-winning cinematic works.

Hollywood Films
Some American movies, in their German or English versions, are also scheduled for viewing. These include familiar Hollywood movies such as "Aladdin," "Jungle Book," "Raiders of the Lost Ark" or "Back to the Future" in German without subtitles. Since the students are usually familiar with such films, they are generally able to follow the meaning of the film. Other U.S. movies may be shown because of their historical or cultural information ("Amadeus").

Film Guide for 2005-06
Below is a brief description of some of the films to be shown this year to help you decide about permission for your son or daughter. The MPAA rating or an estimated rating for non-rated films is in ( ). NOTE: Not all of these films will be viewed each school year.

Aguirre: Wrath of God (1972) Klaus Kinski gives a brilliantly mad performance as a traitorous Spanish conquistador leading an expedition in the jungles of South America. In German. Some violence. (PG)

Amadeus (1984) Oscar-winning film based on Mozart's short life (he died at 35) and career. "A stunning film full of great music, drama, and wit." In English. Mild violence. (PG)

Das Boot ("The Boat," 1981) This German anti-war masterpiece film by director Wolfgang Petersen (In the Line of Fire) recreates the tension and claustrophobia of 43 men on a German U-boat in 1941. 40,000 men served aboard Nazi subs, but only 10,000 came home. In German. Some strong language, violence. (R)

Go Trabi Go (1990) An eastern German teacher traces Goethe's Italian journey when he takes his family on a hilarious vacation in their trusty old Trabi car. Although the film is rated for 12 years and up in Germany, it has a short segment showing nudists on the banks of a river (not uncommon in Germany). In German, no subtitles.

[Teachers: See our Movies in German guide for more films and synopses.]

Die weiße Rose ("The White Rose," 1983) Well-acted film based on the true story of Hans and Sophie Scholl and a group of college students in wartime Munich who fought against Hitler by printing and distributing anti-Nazi leaflets. They and one of their professors were finally executed shortly before the end of the war. In German. Brief nudity. (PG)

Lola rennt ("Run Lola Run," 1998) Franka Potente ("Bourne Identity") stars in this German hit film that uses a kind of "Groundhog Day" repetition to present alternate realities. Filmed in Berlin. I honestly don't know why it has an R rating in the U.S.

Schindler's List (1993) The acclaimed film by Steven Spielberg based on the true story of the German Oskar Schindler and his rescue of Jews in Nazi Germany. Stars Liam Neeson as Schindler and Ben Kingsley as Itzhak Stern. Some violence, nudity. (R) - Oscar-winning film recommended by the National Education Association.

Die Supernasen ("The Super Detectives") This less-than-serious film is about two unemployed young men in Munich who decide to become private detectives. Although rated in Germany for 6 years and up, the film has a brief bare breast scene, so it is listed here. In German, no subtitles.

Der Himmel über Berlin ("Wings of Desire") (1988) Award-winning film by German director Wim Wenders, with Peter Falk ("Columbo") in a supporting role. Angels see in black & white, mortals see in color. An angel in Berlin decides he would like to be human again. Filmed in Berlin shortly before the Wall fell. (Wenders has also made a post-Wall sequel.) In German, French, and English. One short scene with strong language. (PG-13) - Subtitles.
