German almost became the official language of the United States. This "fact" has been quoted in many articles, on TV and elsewhere. It is still one of the most popular "by one vote" stories out there. In the early days of the United States, so the story goes, a crucial vote almost made German the official language of the country. English won out over German by just a single vote.
