Potsdamer Konferenz
Potsdam Conference
From 17 July to 2 August 1945, following the capitulation of the German Wehrmacht and the collapse of the Third Reich, a meeting was held in the town of Potsdam just south of Berlin. Attending were President Harry Truman (US), Josef Stalin (USSR), Winston Churchill and Clement Attlee (GB). The resulting Potsdam Agreement (Potsdamer Abkommen) arranged for the post-war military adminstration (Verwaltung) of Germany by the Allies (die Alliierten). The Potsdam Agreement also set the conditions for de-Nazification, the prosecution of war crimes and the return of Germany to self-rule. It also set up the four sectors or zones of occupation (Besatzungszonen).
