BVG (Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe)
Berlin Transport Operations
All of Berlin's public transportation bus, streetcar, boat, metro, commuter train is run by the BVG. Before the war, the S-Bahn, Berlin's city-wide train system, had been a reliable, well-run, popular transportation system for all Berliners. By 1984 the S-Bahn had shut down many lines and crumbled to the point of virtual failure. Because it had been under the control of the communist Deutsche Reichsbahn, West Berliners had largely boykotted and bankrupted the system. East Germany had not invested any money into improving service or equipment, so that most of the system was antiquated. Today, the BVG-run S-Bahn again offers reliable service all over the German capital.
See the excellent BVG Web site for more information. This excellent site (in German and English) offers route maps, schedules, ticket info and more.
