  • 1202-1204 | Vierter Kreuzzug - The Fourth Crusade, instigated by Pope Innocence III (Innozenz III.).

  • 1212 | Kinderkreuzzug - The Children's Crusade

  • 1214 | Schlacht bei Bouvines - Otto IV is defeated in the Battle of Bouvines. Papacy becomes dominant.

  • 1215 | Karl der Große - Aachen: die Gebeine Karls des Großen werden in den Karlsschrein gelegt. (The bones of Charlemagne are laid to rest in the Charlemagne shrine in Aachen/Aix-la-Chapelle.)

  • 1215-1250 | Friedrich II. von Hohenstaufen - Unter ihm ist Deutschland nur Nebensache. Sein Hauptinteresse ist Italien (Sizilien). (Friedrich II neglects Germany in favor of Italy and Sicily.)

  • 1218-1221 | Fünfter Kreuzzug (Fifth Crusade)

  • 1228-1229 | Sechster Kreuzzug - Friedrich II. im 6. Kreuzzug. (Frederick II embarks on the Sixth Crusade, instigated by Pope Gregory, Papst Gregor.)

  • 1231 | Ketzerverfolgung - Einführung der päpstlichen Inquisition (Ketzerverfolgung), Todesstrafe für Häretiker in Frankreich und dem Römischen Reich. (The Inquisition begins; death penalty for heretics in France and the Holy Roman Empire.)

  • 1241 | Hamburg und Lübeck unterzeichnen einen Verteidigungsvertrag. (Hamburg and Lübeck sign a treaty of mutual defense (Hanseatic League).

  • 1249 | 7. Kreuzzug - Louis IX. fährt im 7. Kreuzzug nach Tunis.

  • 1250-1254 | Konrad IV. - Der Sohn Friedrichs II. regiert nur vier Jahre. Am Ende unterliegt sein Kaisertum dem Papsttum. (The son of Frederick II rules for only two years. In the end his empire falls to the papacy.)

  • 1256 | Hansetag zu Wismar am 6. Januar - The first of Hanseatic League council meetings (in Wismar) that were later held in various German towns.

  • 1256-1273 | Interregnum in Deutschland - A weakened German royal house controlled by seven Kurfürsten opens a period when the German cities thrive, some as "Free Imperial Cities" (frei Reichsstädte).

  • 1259 | Handelsbund zwischen Lübeck, Hamburg, Wismar und Rostock. (Trade league agreement among the northern German cities of Lübeck, Hamburg, Wismar, and Rostock. This is the beginning of the Hanseatic League.)

  • 1270 | 8. Kreuzzug - Louis IX. fährt im 8. Kreuzzug nach Tunis. Er wird mit einem großen Teil seines Heeres erschlagen. (Louis IX sets out for Tunis on the 8th Crusade. He and most of his army are slain. The final true crusade.)

  • 1278 | Die Schlacht auf dem Marchfelde - Rudolf I. von Hapsburg besiegt König Ottokar von Böhmen. Dadurch kommen Österreich und Steiermark an das Haus Hapsburg. (Austria and Styria become part of the House of Hapsburg after Rudolf I defeats King Ottokar of Bohemia in the Battle on the Marchfield.)

  • 1291 | Ewiger Bund - der Rütli-Schwur - The Swiss Confederation of the cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden (the Wilhelm Tell legend). Considered the origin of modern Switzerland (die Schweiz).

  • 1309 | Papst Clemens V. übersiedelt nach Avignon. (Pope Clement V moves to Avignon. The Avignon Papacy - 1309-1377 - also called the Babylonian Captivity, was a period when the popes resided in that French city - ruled by Sicily - until returning to Rome in 1377.

  • 1356 | Goldene Bulle - The Golden Bull serves as the constitution of the Holy Roman Empire (das Reichsgrundgesetz) It gives the archbishops of Mainz, Trier, Cologne shared power in the election of German kings.

  • 1380 | John Wycliffe übersetzt die Bibel ins Englische. (John Wycliffe translates the Bible into English. The Pope ordered his bones exhumed and burned 44 years after he died (1384) because of his revolutionary views and his "unauthorized" Bible translation. Wycliffe's views would have an influence on later reformers such as Hus and Luther.)

  • 1386 | Universität von Heidelberg gegründet. (Heidelberg Univ. founded.)
