Introduction
Heinrich Mann was born in Lübeck on March 27, 1871. His father was a prosperous grain merchant and a prominent figure in the city. (Also see Photos of Lübeck and the Buddenbrookhaus there.) When his father died in 1891, Heinrich's mother moved to Munich with his three younger sisters. Heinrich and his older brother Thomas also soon left the north German town where they had grown up.
Heinrich Mann studied in Berlin, then traveled in Italy before settling in Munich. After the death of his father in 1891, he was financially independent. His best known work, Professor Unrat (The Blue Angel) was published in 1905. Heinrich was married twice. His second wife, Nelly Kröger, suffered from mental illness and committed suicide in 1944 while the Manns were living in California. In the U.S., despite his official position at Warner Brothers as a script writer, Heinrich depended on his brother Thomas for financial support. In 1950 Heinrich, who had always had socialist sympathies, was invited to become the first president of communist East Germany's Academy of Arts, but he died in Santa Monica on March 12 before he could accept his new position. Heinrich Mann's works include:
- Im Schlaraffenland (1900)
- Professor Unrat (1905)
- Die kleine Stadt (1909)
- Der Untertan (1914/1918)
- Die Armen (1917)
- Der Kopf (1925)
- Die Jugend des Königs Henri Quatre (1935)
- Henri Quatre 2 (1938)
