Part Two: Five Questions

With Resources and Links

FIVE QUESTIONS » 1 | 2 | German Companies | Career/Job Links | Biz Contents

Using the many links and resources we offer (below), you can gain the knowledge you need to plan and execute a more effective job search. Take the time to look around. Be observant. A little patience will save you time in the long run. But first you need to ask yourself these five questions.

What You Need To Know
Here's a list of questions that you need to answer for a more effective German job search:

1  What skills and knowledge do you have to offer an employer? This is usually more important than your German skills. If you know absolutely nothing about computer programming, then you probably shouldn't apply for a job in that field, even if you speak German fluently. On the other hand, if your programming skills are top-notch, then your German abilities may take a back seat. Work with your strengths! (If your company is transferring you overseas, you need to ask what the move will mean for your career. Out of sight, out of the action? And what about when you return from the assignment?)

2  At what level are your German abilities? And what about other family members? Be realistic! Can you and your family cope with the day-to-day realities of living and working in a German-speaking culture? (You're not tourists any more!) If you're single, then you only have to worry about yourself. If not, be aware that a spouse, not to mention the kids, can feel isolated and resentful in a foreign culture if they don't speak the language or understand the culture.

3  If relocation is involved, what expenses and impacts will a big move create? Who pays for what? Do you know what's involved in renting a German house or flat? (In Germany, "unfurnished" can mean no kitchen sink or light bulbs!) Where will the kids go to school? Should you ship your car or not? What else gets shipped and what stays at home? Who takes care of all the moving red tape? What's a German winter like? (For answers, see the Culture/Contacts and other links on our Career/Job Links page.)

4  Do you have a work permit or residency status that allows you to work in the country? Do you know the rules and regulations for obtaining such a permit? Will your company take care of that? If not, can you afford the services of a relocation agency that will?

5  What's your cultural I.Q.? Are you prepared to live in a foreign culture? How about your spouse or family? Do you know what's involved in getting a German driver's license? Will you have a car in Germany? Have you ever bought groceries in Germany? How adaptable are you and other family members? Little things can mean a lot as they add up over weeks and months. What happens when the newness wears off? (For answers, see the Culture/Contacts and other links on our Career/Job Links page.)
