INTRODUCTION/EINLEITUNG
Fairy talesin the original Germanare not always that easy to read. While this selection is short, it is not entirely easy. For one thing, in Schlaraffenland ("the land of the lazy/idle") you may encounter weird things like a red cow or a sharp sword slashing through a bridge. The theme of a luxuriant land where idleness is a virtue and hard work a sin first appeared in the fifteenth century. (In English this land of idle luxury is known as "Cockaigne" or "Cockayne.") Brant's Schluraffenland was published in 1494. A later version by Hans Sachs came out in 1530. It is considered a parody of the idea of paradise. The selection below is from the Grimm version and has the fairy tale elements of violence (tearing out tongues!), role reversal (doves killing wolves) and tall tales a la Baron von Münchhausen.
NOTE: This selection uses the old German spelling, reflecting the format of the original Grimm source material.
