These exercises were designed to be used with the German film "Lola rennt." All the items are from the film's first segment only.

Übung A - Wer sagt das?

PERSON KEY: A. Lola  B. Manni  C. Papa  D. der Wachmann
  E. Papas Geliebte (mistress)  F. Lolas Mutter

EXTRA CREDIT (optional): Write the English for each item.

 1. E "Liebst du mich?" (dreimal) [Do you love me? (said 3 times)] - Note: Lola also asks this question, but not in the first segment.

 2. C "Manni? Wer ist Manni?" [Manni? Who's Manni?] - Indicating how little he knows about his daughter's life.

 3. D "Ball ist rund. Spiel dauert 90 Minuten. Soviel ist schon mal klar. Alles andere ist Theorie. - Ball ab!" [Ball's round. Game lasts 90 minutes. That much is clear. Everything else is theory.] - These lines originally come from one of Germany's most famous soccer coaches, Sepp Herberger (1897-1977). (Source: Tom Tykwer Homepage)

 4. B "Da war so ein Penner." [There was some bum.]

 5. B "Ihre Karte." [Your card. (telephone card)]

 6. C "Sie ist keine hundert Tausend wert!" [It's not worth any 100,000! (speaking about his life insurance policy, die Lebensversicherung)]

 7. E "Weil ich schwanger bin." [Because I'm pregnant.]

 8. B "Warum ausgerechnet heute? Du bist immer so puenktlich. Immer!" [Why today, of all days (did you have to be late)? You're always so punctual. Always!]

 9. F "Gehst du einkaufen? Ich brauch' Shampoo." [Are you going shopping? I need shampoo. (as Lola is leaving)]

10. E "Vergiss es! Vergiss es!" [Forget it! Forget it! (to Lola when she suggests he should try to explain or skip town)]

Note: Item "A" (Lola) is not used.

Using the KEY below, simply identify WHERE (WO) the following lines from the film are said. (All the items are from the film's first segment only.)

EXTRA CREDIT (optional): Write the English for each item.

1. C "Schmeissen Sie sie bitte 'raus!" [Please throw her out! (said by Papa to the guard in the bank)]

2. E "Schlampe!" [Tramp! (said by the lady Lola bumps into on the street)]

3. B "Fuenfhundert? Was soll ich mit fuenfhundert Mark, eh?" [500? What am supposed to do with 500 (lousy) marks? (said by Manni on the phone)]

4. D "Kassen auf! Alle Kassen auf!" [Registers open! All the registers open! (Manni during his holdup)]

5. C "Du siehst furchtbar aus." [You look terrible. (Lola's dad at the bank)]

6. C "Man sieht sich." [See you around. (Guard after he throws Lola out. - Since this is in front of the bank entrnace, it is also correct to answer "E.")]

7. D "Haende hoch, junger Mann! Aber dalli!" [Hands up, young man! And be quick about it! (said by supermarket guard to Manni)]

8. C "Warum ausgerechnet hier—jetzt und sofort?" [Why here, of all places -- now and right away? (dad to his mistress at the bank)]

9. E "Stehenbleiben!" [Stop (where you are)! (said by the cop before he accidentally shoots Lola)]

10. E "Haben Sie die Uhrzeit?" [Do you have the time? (Lola to the old lady on the street in front of the bank, so "C" is also correct.)]
