Der Bebelplatz Nazi Book Burnings
Known as Opernplatz prior to 1947, this historic square is located just south of Unter den Linden near the boulevard's eastern end, a few blocks away from the Spree Canal. Flanking the square are the Deutsche Staatsoper (German State Opera)just across the street from Humboldt Universityand the Hedwigs-Kathedrale (1773), the principal Catholic church in Berlin, built by Friedrich der Große (Frederick the Great).

All of the exterior shots at Lola's father's bank were filmed here, including the very funny scene when Lola emerges from the bank only to see armed police trying to shoo her away. But the Bebelplatz is notorious for something far less amusing. A bronze plaque in the center of the square marks the location of the Nazi book burnings in Berlin in 1933. See the photo below.

This inconspicuous metal plaque in the middle of the historic
Bebelplatz marks the spot where the Nazis burned books
by many of Germany's intellectuals and scientists.
