Before World War II the Friedrichstraße was one of Berlin's most exclusive shopping avenues. After the war, it was best known as the street where Checkpoint Charlie was located. Many American and other tourists (including your Guide) crossed into East Berlin on this street. Today Friedrichstraße is regaining its former glory as it again becomes the site of exclusive shops and the modernistic Galeries Lafayette department store (Kaufhaus).

The Französische Str. U-Bahn station seen in "Lola rennt" was a so-called Geisterbahnhof ("ghost station") before the Wall fell. The U-Bahn that ran beneath the streets of both East and West Berlin was not allowed to stop at certain stations in East Berlin – to prevent escape attempts. The nearby Friedrichstraße station was a border checkpoint with passport controls.
