Locations Tour: Stop 3

Gendarmenmarkt (Gendarme Market)
In the film, Lola ran across this square in what used to be East Berlin. During the GDR era (zu DDR-Zeiten, East German times) this historic area, located just south of Französische Str. not far from Unter den Linden, was named "Platz der Akademie" for the Akademie der Wissenschaften (Science Academy) that faced it.

.

Today, as with many things in eastern Germany, the square has regained its former name—derived from the old Gendarme regiment that was housed here from 1736 to 1773. The three-block square is flanked on three sides by Karl Friedrich Schinkel's Schauspielhaus concert hall (1821) in the middle and two churches at each end (der Französische und der Deutsche Dom). The square is one of Berlin's nicest and oldest (1688), and is said to be modeled after the Piazza del Popolo in Rome. - Near the end of the film you can see a nice low angle shot of Lola running across this square, with the buildings in the background.

Schinkel's Schauspielhaus (lit., "play building") theater was completely destroyed in WWII. Not until 1984 was it reconstructed and opened as a showcase concert hall by the German Democratic Republic. The Prussian state architect Schinkel (1781-1841) not only designed many of Berlin's classical structures, including Die neue Wache (1818) and the Altes Museum (1828) on Museum Island, but as a city planner he is also responsible for Berlin's wide boulevards and many of its cityscapes.
