One online list of German magazines managed to come up with over 90 different German magazine categories - from Amateurfunk (ham radio) to Transport. But often the line between a so-called Frauenmagazin and an Illustrierte isn't that clear-cut. Although some categories may be obvious, others are less so. Therefore, our list is alphabetical. You can decide for yourself in which category each magazine should be placed. See the GLP link below for subscriptions in the US or Canada.

Magazines in Germany

Das Beste
Just like the American original, the German Reader's Digest is a monthly. But it contains more than just translations from the English version. Many Das Beste articles are taken from German originals or are adapted to reflect German culture. Bonus: Because it's a monthly, the German Reader's Digest is a lower-cost subscription than the German weeklies!

Das Beste
The German edition of Reader's Digest
is more than just German translations.

Bild
Largest circulation newspaper in Germany, with about 4.4 million copies sold daily. Probably Germany's best Boulevardzeitung (widely circulated tabloid, sold mostly on newsstands rather than by subscription). The BamS Sunday edition (2.4 million circulation) almost fits the magazine category.

Brigitte
A long-time favorite among Germany's Frauenzeitschriften.

Bunte
Bunte could well be exhibit number one for the difficulty of categorizing German weeklies. Is it a woman's, gossip, news or illustrated magazine? At any rate, it sells over 700,000 copies per week.

Capital
A German business/financial magazine.

Cinema
One of Germany's leading movie magazines. Monthly.

Computer Bild
A computer magazine from the giant Axel Springer Verlag. Games (Spiele), software, etc.

Focus
Entered the German news market in 1993 to compete with Der Spiegel

Schau ins Land
A monthly AUDIO magazine in German. From Champs-Elysees, Inc.

Der Spiegel
One of the best German magazine sites! For many years it was Germany's only news weekly, but Der Spiegel has always had a good reputation for solid investigative journalism. Facing competition from Focus since 1993, the old guy on the block has adapted to hold on to its lead. Some complain that it has become too much like its challenger, but change was inevitable.

Stern
Over the years, Germany's widest circulation illustrated magazine has managed to survive scandals (the fake Hitler diary) and increasing competition to remain on top. Its online edition is also one of the best, although only a few selected articles from the print edition are available on the Web.

SUPERillu
One of Germany's newest weeklies,
SUPERillu has been a big hit in the East.

SUPERillu
One of Germany's newest illustrated weeklies, SUPERillu has become an eastern German hit by catering to the east-west divide. It is one of the few success stories of western publishers who went into the East after the Wall came down. It has a very respectible weekly circulation of over 550,000.

Die Zeit
Under editor Roger de Weck this intellectual, liberal weekly has undergone needed modernization in recent years. Now if they could only bring back the North American edition.

GLP German Subscription Service
GLP offers six-month or annual subscriptions to the print versions of German-language periodicals for readers in the US and Canada (German Canadian News Co.).
