The 2007 CD: “12” (“Zwölf”)

The “12” (“Zwölf”) album is the latest CD album by Herbert Grönemeyer. Like the “Mensch” CD, it was recorded in London, where Grönemeyer has spent most of the past decade.

Grönemeyer has always been very protective of his music rights, going so far in the past as to not allow the inclusion of even one of his songs in a non-profit, educational German music collection for German teachers by the Goethe Institute/Inter Nationes. His new MENSCH CD is copy-protected, as this German sticker (left) states: kopier-geschützte CD.
However, from what I've heard, this does not necessarily mean people haven't been able to copy this or other copy-protected CDs. I won't comment on that any further, but I will offer a helpful tip about playing copy-protected CDs on your computer. Some computer CD drives may hesitate or seem to get confused when you try to play eine kopier-geschützte CD. Some iMac SuperDrive computers may even seem to crash at first, or not allow you to eject the CD disk, but people have told me that if you wait a few minutes, don't press anything, and don't panic, the iMac will recover and a copy-protected CD will play normally. (Apple claims that its newer models do not have this problem. For older models, Apple released a software update. Newer Apple SuperDrive computers already have the update installed, so check first at the Apple site.) In my experience, there are no problems playing this CD on a normal CD player.

The “Mensch” Music Video
Grönemeyer's official Web site is a cool experience in general, and the artist has been kind enough to offer a full-length Flash, but postage-stamp size version of the music video for the song Mensch there. If you don't have the Flash plug-in already, it's a short, free download from a link at Grönemeyer's site.
The MENSCH Music Video - Hear/view the entire song as a music video from www.groenemeyer.de, complete with Eisbär (Flash plug-in required). Click on “Mensch” at the bottom, then wait for the "Fotos_Video" link to float by, then click on the "buttons." If you don't have a fast connection, be patient.

Grönemeyer in Das Boot
Herbert Grönemeyer plays a major part in Wolfgang Petersen's award-winning film DAS BOOT ("The Boat," 1981). He plays a war correspondent on board a German submarine (U-Boot) in World War II. German director Wolfgang Petersen went on to direct Hollywood hits such as IN THE LINE OF FIRE, AIR FORCE ONE, and THE PERFECT STORM.
Grönemeyer turns out to be an excellent actor, and Das Boot is well worth watching. Petersen re-released his German-made 1981 film as a restored director's cut in 1997. (Columbia/Sony is releasing a new special DVD "Superbit Collection" edition of DAS BOOT on March 4, 2003.) The Das Boot soundtrack CD, with Klaus Doldinger's filmscore, is also very good.

The Hidden Track on the “Mensch” CD
Track number 11 on the “Mensch” album was recorded by Herbert Grönemeyer's son Felix. It is not so much "hidden" as it is delayed. If you just let the CD play on (silently) after song number 10, in about 5-10 minutes (has anyone timed it?) you'll hear the 11th bonus track entitled "Letzter Tag". If you use the "skip" button, the CD starts from the beginning rather than going to the hidden track.
