SONG BACKGROUND

There's an old German saying: "Der Ehrliche ist der Dumme." ("The honest one gets the short end of the stick.") This is is a Prinzen song that takes that same cynical position—that you have to be an S.O.B. ("Schwein") in order to get ahead in this world.

Album: GANZ OBEN - HITS MCMXCI (available from the Apple iTunes Music Store)

(DU MUSST EIN) SCHWEIN SEIN
"(You Have to) be an S.O.B."

Also see the Original German lyrics.

I was always friendly, sweet, and nice,
could never get any woman into bed.
And when I switched to macho, cool and arrogant,
suddenly they came running.

And once again I see how it goes in life.
A guy who's tough, loud, and drinks a lot,
appeals more to women.
Who really wants a nice guy?

So you draw your conclusions
and you switch over to bad.
The world is a courtroom
and the bad guys are considered right.

You have to be an S.O.B. in this world
  - be an S.O.B.
You have to be mean in this world
  - be mean
'cause if you want to go through life honestly
  - honestly
You'll get a kick in the a-- as thanks
  - dangerous

Because I know I can get by with it,
I go to the front of the line everywhere,
and if someone's soft and weak
just listen to me laugh at that.
With my friendly colleagues
I do completely the opposite.
Although nobody likes me,
soon I'll be sitting in the Bundestag.*

You have to be an S.O.B. ...

* The German parliament or house of representatives. DIE PRINZEN were criticized for this line.
