German Christmas Carols

Rudolph das kleine Rentier
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (2)

Rud DVD This popular Christmas song was first recorded and made famous by the American cowboy singer Gene Autry. In 1939, in an effort to attract more holiday shoppers to the Montgomery Ward stores (1872-2001), Robert L. May wrote a narrative poem about an underdog reindeer who saves Christmas one foggy night. Johnny Marks' lyrics are responsible for a change in one of the reindeer names invented by Clement Clarke Moore in 1823. See German Myth 5 for more.

Version 2
Katrin Weiher translation

Ihr kennt Dasher und Dancer
und Prancer und Vix,
Cupid, Comet, Donner und Blitz.
Doch ist euch auch klar,
wer am berühmtesten war?

Rudolph, das kleine Rentier,
seine Nase war so schön,
denn sie war leuchtend rot.
Das war nicht zu übersehn.

Aber die andern Tiere
streckten ihm die Zunge raus.
Und bei den Rentierspielen
schlossen sie ihn immer aus.

Doch dann sagte Santa Claus,
jeder konnt' es hör'n,
Rudolph, es ist neblig heut',
könntest du den Schlitten führ'n?

O, wie sie ihn da liebten
und man hörte laut ihr Schrein:
Rudolph und seine Nase
geh'n in die Geschichte ein.
Literal translation
(Orig. English lyrics)

You know Dasher and Dancer
and Prancer and Vix,
Cupid, Comet, Donner and Blitz.
But is it also clear to you
who the most famous was?

Rudolph the tiny reindeer,
his nose was so pretty
because it was glowing red.
That was obvious.

But the other animals
stuck out their tongues at him,
and during reindeer games
they always excluded him.

But then Santa Claus said,
everyone could hear it,
Rudolph, it's foggy today,
could you guide the sleigh?

Oh how they loved him then,
and you could hear their shouting,
Rudolph and his nose
will go down in history.
