Song Lyrics in German and English
Udo Lindenberg und das Panikorchester
Udo Lindenberg (1946- )
The popular German rock musician and singer Udo Lindenberg was born on 17 May 1946 in the Westphalian town of Gronau, not far from the Dutch border. As a child he took up playing drums, and by 1971 he had started his own band. Udo Lindenberg and his "Panikorchester" had their first real success with the 1973 album "Alles klar auf der Andrea Doria."
Since then, Lindenberg has recorded many albums and done many rock tours in German-speaking Europe. He was one of the main forces helping to make German rock music popular in the face of a massive invasion of English-language rock by British, American, and Australian artists in the 1960s and '70s. Lindenberg was also the first West German rock star to appear (1983) in a live concert in East Germany before the Wall fell. In his songs as well, Lindenberg made an effort to bring East and West closer ("Der Generalsekretär," "Wir wollen doch einfach nur zusammen sein").
In 1999, for the 10th anniversary celebration of the opening of the Berlin Wall, Lindenberg held a concert at the Brandenburg Gate. Today the aging rocker ("der Rock-Opa," a sort of German Mick Jagger) continues to do concert tours, make media appearances, and indulge in his hobby of painting (and his exhibits). - Recent albums: "Kompletto - alle Hits" (2004), "Absolut" (2004), "Atlantic Affairs" (2002, a musical - on DVD and live). - Some of his songs can be downloaded from his site (see link below) and from iTunes. (See our article on Downloading German Songs from the U.S. iTunes Store.)
Udo Lindenberg Songs
- O-Rhesus-Negativ - German and English lyrics for Udo's amusing "vampire" song; popular for Halloween!
- Horizont - German and English lyrics for one of my favorite Udo songs, mellow with easy-to-understand lyrics; includes a cloze exercise for vocabulary.
- Der Generalsekretär - German and English lyrics for a song about Erich Honecker, the former head of the DDR (East Germany)
- Sonderzug nach Pankow - German and English lyrics for Udo's unique version of "Chattanooga Choo Choo" - a plea to allow him to perform in East Germany
