Namenstage im April
Name Days in April

Including April Holidays/Feiertage

The observance of name days or feast days is seen primarily in predominantly Catholic countries, such as Austria, and the Catholic regions of Germany, Switzerland and other lands. But name days are also observed in Protestant Scandinavia and non-Catholic regions of Germany. In some places, including parts of Germany and in Eastern Orthodox countries, your name day may be more important than your actual birthday!

Although we have listed some modern names in our calendar, many of the names listed in our "name days" are traditional saint's names or others canonized by the Roman Catholic church. However, some days do have more than one name associated with them. March 2 is the name day for "Ines" and "Karl," while "Nabor" and "Felix" both celebrate July 12 as their name day. In some cases we have listed name variations, e.g., "Achim" as a variation of "Joachim" or "Gerhard" and "Georg." One of the most popular names for boys in German Europe today is an old biblical name: Lukas.

Certain names are shared by more than one saint, with their "feast day" (Festtag, same as the name day) on different dates, usually the date of their death. To cite an April example, the name "Franz" (Francis) is shared by St. Francis of Paola (1416-1507, Franz von Paola, founder of the Minim Friars and patron saint of Italian sailors, Festtag: 2 April), St. Francis of Assisi (1181-1226, Franz von Assisi, founder of the Franciscan order, Festtag: 4 Oct.) and St. Francis Xavier (1506-1552, Franz Xaver, co-founder of the Jesuits, Festtag: 29 Dec.).
