St. Martin's Day (11 Nov.)  der Martinstag

This day, dedicated to St. Martin of Tours, is the beginning of the Christmas (Weihnachten) season in many parts of Europe (as well as the Karneval or Fasching celebration). Goose (Gans), a symbol of St. Martin, is often served at this time, much as turkey is part of the US Thanksgiving in November. Born around 336 in what is now Hungary (Ungarn), Martinus grew up in Pavia, Italy. Legend has it that one cold winter day Martin, serving as a soldier in the Roman army, cut his coat in half with his sword and gave one half to a beggar. That night he had a dream in which he saw Jesus clad in the coat he had given the beggar. Afterwards Martin had himself baptized as a Christian and was allowed to leave the army. He later became the Bishop of Tours. He was known for his humanity and was credited with several miracles before his death on 8 Nov. 397. Today a basilica stands over his grave in Tours. (For more information about St. Martin see: Martin von Tours.)
