The frogs do indeed croak, but they don't make the weather.

A rainbow in the evening gives hope for good weather,

Regenbogen am Morgen macht dem Schäfer Sorgen,
Regenbogen am Abend, ist dem Schäfer labend.
A rainbow in the morning makes the shepherd worry;
A rainbow in the evening, and the shepherd's at ease.
Reift das Rebholz richtig aus,
so wird's übers Jahr viel Wein geben.
If the grapevine ripens properly,
there'll be a lot of wine all year.

Siehst du die Schwalben niedrig fliegen,
wirst du Regenwetter kriegen.
Fliegen die Schwalben in den Höh'n,
kommt ein Wetter, das ist schön.
If you see the swallows flying low,
you'll get rainy weather.
If the swallows are flying high,
beautiful weather is nigh.
Siehst du fremde Wandervögel,
wird es kalt nach alter Regel.
If you see strange migratory birds,
it'll be cold says the old rule.

Southwest - nothing but rain!

Trägt's Häschen lang sein Sommerkleid,
so ist der Winter auch noch weit.
If the bunny's wearing his summer coat a long time
then winter is still far off.
Viele Eicheln im September,
viel Schnee im März,
ein reiches Kornjahr allerwärts.
Lots of acorns in September,
lots of snow in March,
means a bountiful grain year for all.

Was stinkt, das düngt.
That which stinks, fertilizes.
Wenn der Mist brav stinkt, so gibt's Regen.
When the manure is giving off a good stink, there'll be rain.
Wenn der Mond hat einen Ring,
folgt der Regen allerding.
If the moon has a ring,
rain is sure to follow.
Wenn die Blätter spät fallen, kommen sie wieder früh.
If the leaves fall late, they'll come back early.
Wenn die Hähne in Streit geraten
und einen wilden Reigen gegeneinander führen,
sollst du merken und verstehen,
bald wirst du den Wind oder's Wetter sich änder sehen.
If the roosters start fighting
and strutting about and facing off wildly,
you should take note and understand that
soon you'll see a change in the wind or weather.
Wenn die Sonne sticht und die Kühe brummen,
sagen die Bauern alsbald, es wird gewiß Regen kommen.
When the sun's burning down and the cows are grumbling,
that's when the farmers say that rain is surely coming.
Wenn kurz vor Vollmond der Sonn'aufgang neblig war,
wird's Wetter in den nächsten Tagen warm und klar.
If the sunrise was foggy just before a full moon,
the weather will be warm and clear for the next few days.
Wenn Wind kommt vor Regen,
ist wenig dran gelegen.
Kommt aber Regen vor Wind,
dann zieh die Segel ein geschwind.
If wind comes before rain,
it doesn't mean much.
But if rain comes before wind,
then lower the sails right away.
Wer auf den Wind achtet, der säet nicht;
wer auf die Wolken siehet, der erntet nicht.
He who pays attention to the wind never sows his seeds;
he who watches the clouds never harvests his crop.
Wer in der Ernte nicht hilft schneiden,
muss im Winter Hunger leiden.
He who doesn't help mow/cut the harvest,
must go hungry in the the winter.
Winter und Sommer haben verschiedene Sinnen:
Der Winter muss verzehren und der Sommer gewinnen.
Winter and summer have different purposes:
winter must languish and summer must produce.

Ziehen die wilden Gäns' und Enten fort,
ist der Winter bald am Ort.
When the wild geese and ducks take their leave,
winter will soon be here.
Zieht die Spinne ins Gemach,
kommt ihr gleich der Winter nach.
When the spider withdraws into its chamber,
winter will follow her right away.
