Sacher cake, Sachertorte e Sachertorte (-n)

Sachertorte is a rich chocolate cake with a special chocolate glaze and an inner layer of apricot jam (Marillenmarmelade). The cake is named for the Austrian baker Franz Sacher (1816-1907) who first created the recipe in 1832 as a 16-year-old apprentice at Prince Metternich's court. His son Eduard Sacher later refined the recipe and also opened Vienna's Hotel Sacher in 1876.
