From Siemens VDO Automotive AG:
The introduction of the digital tachograph (DTCO) signals the end of the tachograph disc era - The publication of EU Regulation 1360/2002 with Annex 1B in the Official Journal of the European Union has signaled the end of the classic tachograph disc for commercial vehicles. As from 2004 it will be replaced by the recording on digital storage media. 24 months after the publication in the Official Journal, all new vehicles have to be equipped with the corresponding digital tachographs. The trip records will then be stored on the electronic driver cards and in the tachograph. Siemens VDO Automotive AG has developed the digital tachograph DTCO to series production maturity and is presenting the complete system at the IAA 2002.
The publication of the Official Journal on 5 August 2002 with EU Regulation 1360/2002 has a farreaching impact for truck traffic in Europe. Annex 1B contained therein states that after a 24-month grace period (i.e. from 6 August 2004), tachographs with tacho disc will no longer be used in new vehicles. In all newly registered trucks and omnibuses, the driver's driving and rest times and the driven speed will then be documented electronically. A prerequisite for this is a changeover from the analog recording tachograph to the digital tachograph (DTCO) with smart card slots. - from Siemens VDO Automotive AG
