Serious astrologers cringe at the sound of the word Sternzeichen. They insist that there are only Tierkreiszeichen and Sternbilder. But in everyday use, most German-speakers use the word Sternzeichen anyway.

The zodiac is both astrological and astronomical. Both had a common beginning in ancient times, although the two no longer coincide. That's because the 12 signs originated some 2000 years ago with the Greek astronomer Hipparchus, and over all that time the constellation positions, as viewed from earth, have changed.
