Der Tipp Nr. 11

Cognates: German and English are related languages, linguistic cousins you might say. They share many vocabulary terms that are either Germanic (Haus, Mann), Latin (Radio, studieren), or of other origins (Tabak/tobacco). Such words that are similar or even identical in two different languages are called “cognates.” You should pay attention to these similarities to help you learn German vocabulary.

Caution: There are also “false cognates”—words that appear to be something they're not. The German words also or bald are “false friends” that don't have the same meaning as the identical English words. See the link below for more...
