German Tip of the Day: Beginners

Der Tipp Nr. 14

leben/wohnen: German has two verbs that can mean “to live.” But they are different; one means to reside somewhere (wohnen), the other means to be alive (leben). The verb leben can also be used for “to reside,” but wohnen cannot be used in the sense of “to be alive.“ To keep them straight, think of the related noun die Wohnnung, which means a place to reside, and apartment or flat.
