Bauhaus Dessau

Although Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus in Weimar in 1919, the famous school of art and architecture was forced by political conditions to move to Dessau in 1925. The Bauhaus building in Dessau was constructed based on designs by Gropius in 1925/26. It was this building's architecture as well as the important worldwide influence of the Bauhaus on architecture and design in the 20th century that motivated UNESCO to add the Bauhaus and related buildings to its World Heritage List in 1996.

After the Bauhaus Dessau was shut down by the Nazis in 1932, the building was used for a variety of purposes. Badly damaged in the war, the Bauhaus building was not completely reconstructed until 1976. Since 1986 (Dessau was then still part of East Germany), the Bauhaus Dessau - Center for Design has used the building as a design school. The Bauhaus Kolleg has offered an international postgraduate program since 1999.
