Der Spiegel's
'Chronik des Jahres 2003'
Back in February 2000 the Don Kohleone (Helmut Kohl) CDU scandal was the big news in Germany. The right-wing Jörg Haider in Austria was also in the news then. That's when I first wrote this article; it seemed like a good time to point the way to online sources of current news straight from the source, in German or English. (Did you know that Der Spiegel summarizes some of its articles in English? Unfortunately, the Berliner Morgenpost no longer does.)
Since the events of September 11, 2001, those stories seem rather tame compared to the axis of evil (die Achse des Bösen) and the word terrorism (Terrorismus) has taken on a new meaning. But the nightly news is also filled with political and business news from Germany and the other German-speaking companies. (How's the DaimlerChrysler merger doing these days?) You may also want to find out what the German take is on events in the U.S. or the UK. What are the German newspapers saying about the American presidential race?
You can even watch the TV news from Austria or Germany with RealVideo or Mediaplayer. See our links to radio and TV stations and other news sources in the German-speaking world on the next page.
