Text Messaging auf Deutsch

German SMS Sources Vocabulary

SMS Part 1 > SMS Part 2 > Telephone Glossary

Because many German SMS Web sites offer ready-made messages in a variety of categories, they are ideal for finding authentic, modern, everyday German expressions. Another advantage of the SMS phenomenon is the fact that it is a favorite of younger Germans, and reflects their language and slang. Sometimes this can also be a disadvantage, since a few young Germans (who also contribute the messages) don't seem to know how to spell very well, plus German text messaging uses a lot of abbreviations (Kürzel), just as English text messaging does. (See some German examples below.)

Here are a few of the Themen (topics) found at German SMS sites:

SMS-Sprüche - SMS Sayings
Note: Not all of these topics will
be found at any given SMS site.
Ausreden - Excuses Lehrersprüche - Teacher Sayings
Bauernregeln - Rural Sayings Liebesworte - Words of Love
Einladungen - Invitations Männer - Men
Emanzen - Women's Libbers Ossi - East Germans
Filmzitate - Movie Quotes Quiz-Fragen - Quiz Questions
Frauen - Women Weise Worte - Words of Wisdom
Glückwünsche - Best Wishes Witze - Jokes

By the way, I got the idea for doing a movie-themed Zitat des Tages (German Quotation of the Day) when I discovered the Filmzitate category and some interesting cinema quotes in German at one of the SMS sites. As I said, SMS is a good source of German vocabulary and expressions.

Most German SMS sites require free registration (kostenlose Anmeldung) to send a message, but often you can view the messages and graphics without registering. While a few SMS services charge a fee of 10-20 euro cents per message, some of the German sites listed below offer SMS for free. One bit of warning: Although I have tried to avoid it in my links, some German SMS sites feature content (text and graphics) that could be considered unsuitable for younger readers. I am not responsible for outside links (below).
