Finding Computer and Internet Terms

For some time we have had our own English-German Computer Glossary here at the German Language site, but I recently discovered several new Web sources for Internet and computer-related vocabulary.

The German publishing house Langenscheidt has its Internet-Wörterbuch with over 1000 Internet and computer expressions. Each day the Langenscheidt site also offers a new "term of the day."

The Netwerker Glossar is an alphabetical listing of computer and Internet expressions by Frank Heinemann and Uwe Ludwig. All of the terms -- mostly English terms such as "Backbone" or "Terminal Protocol" are defined/explained in German.

Inge DiBella's Computersprache im Deutschunterricht, on the other hand, gives the English-to-German for terms from "ALT-key" ("die Codetaste") to "virtual" ("virtuell, gedacht"). Her "Englisch-deutsches Fachwörterbuch" is divided up into three sections: (1) Keyboard - die Tastatur, (2) Word Processing - die Textverarbeitung, and (3) World Wide Web. DiBella's site also links to Wichtige Computerbegriffe kurz erklärt by the Computerclub Regensburg. This all-German site offers a comprehensive list with brief definitions of computer expressions.

Yet another approach to an online computer glossary is the Netglos Multilingual Glossary of Net Terms. Netglos lets you click on one of several languages under each defined term. Thus, you can look at the English term and then click on Deutsch to see the German definition -- or vice versa. Netglos also offers definitions in several other languages.

By the way, we have also added many new terms to our own English-German Computer Glossary. Take a look!
