By the numbers... "Run Lola Run" is filled with numbers (Nummern/Zahlen).

Viele Nummern
Manni has 20 minutes to live. He lost 100,000 marks, and so on. Even language teachers often underestimate the difficulty of working with numbers in a foreign language, and this film is a good showcase for shattering the myth of numbers being easy.

Anyone can learn to count in German. Eins, zwei, drei is hardly for rocket scientists – or is it? The real-life use of numbers can be a genuine challenge to even a good student of German. After all, even in English or another native language, we can get numbers mixed up. Students also need to learn some of the "tricks of the trade" in German numbers. If they get off the plane and have never heard "zwo" for "zwei" – that's a problem. "Lola rennt" offers several opportunities for learners to test themselves in this regard. There are many numerical situations concerning both money and time.

"Ich weiß, ich weiß... Fünfhundert? Was soll ich mit fünfhundert Marke?"
   - Dialog from "Lola rennt"

When Lola holds up her father's bank, how much money does the bank clerk need to get in order to make the total of 100,000 marks? When she goes into a Berlin casino to bet on her boyfriend's life, she has to bargain with the lady in the entrance hall to have enough money to get in. How much does Lola have? How much does she need? (Without looking at the subtitles!)

Numbers are a language skill required in everyday life: phone numbers, addresses, prices, and so on. The film offers some good listening practice – and a chance to show students/learners that numbers are not always as easy as they sound.
