The following is a glossary of common German idioms and expressions that have to do with fruits and vegetables. Expressions that need further clarification are followed by a sample sentence.
Das Obst - Fruit
Alles Banane! /All is Banana -> All is well!
Banane sein/ To be a banana -> To be crazy
Ich bin total Banane an manchen Nächten.
I’m completely crazy some nights.
In den sauren Apfel beißen/ To bite in the sour apple –> To bite the bullet
Man muss manchmal in den sauren Apfel beißen, um unseren Traum zu erlangen.
One has to
sometimes bite the bullet, in order to achieve one’s dream.
Der Apfel fällt nicht weit von den Stamm/ The apple does not fall far from the trunk –> The apple does not fall far from the tree.
Ich rede von Äpfeln und nicht von Zwiebeln/ I speak of apples and not of onions -> I’m not talking about that.
Für einen Apfel und ein Ei/ For an apple and an egg -> to buy something on the cheap.
Sie verkauft ihre Bücher für einen Apfel und ein Ei.
She’s selling her books very cheaply.
Äpfel mit Birnen vergleichen/ To compare apples with pears –> To compare apples and oranges.
Du kannst das nicht so sagen. Du vergleichst Äpfel mit Birnen.
You can’t say it like that. You are comparing apples with oranges.
Eine weiche Birne haben/ To have a soft pear –> to be dumb.
Der hat eine weiche Birne.
He’s really dumb.
Mit dem ist nicht gut Kirschen essen/ It’s not good to eat cherries with him -> Don’t mess with him.
Sich wie reife Kirschen verkaufen/ To sell like ripe cherries -> To sell like hotcakes.
Diese Pullis verkaufen sich wie reife Kirschen.
These sweaters are selling like hotcakes.
Er ruht sich auf seinen Lorbeeren aus - He rests on his Laurels.
Jemanden ausquetschen wie eine Zitrone/ To squeeze somebody out like a lemon –> To squeeze the orange dry
Mit dieser Arbeit fühle ich mich ausgequetscht wie eine Zitrone.
Rot wie eine Tomate werden/ To become red like a tomato –> to become embarrassed or angry.
Als sie im Zimmer hereintrat, wurde er rot wie eine Tomate
When she entered the room, he turned all red.
Tomaten auf den Augen haben / To have tomatoes on the eyes –> To be blind.
Sich zu Obst machen/ To turn oneself into fruit -> To make a fool of yourself.
Ich mach mich oft zu Obst, weil ich dauernd nervös bin.
I often make myself a fool, because I am constantly nervous.
Auch ein guter Baum bringt ungleiches Obst/ Even a good tree brings forth unequal fruit
Im eigenen Saft schmoren To let someone stew in his/her own juices
Lassen wir ihn in seinen eigenen Saft schmoren.
Let him stew in his own juice.
Ohne Saft und Kraft/ Without juice and strength -> Without much substance/juice
Seine Rede war ohne Saft und Kraft.
His speech was flat.
Noch grün hinter den Ohren sein To be still green behind the ears -> Not matured
Er ist total neu und noch grün hinter den Ohren.
He is brand-spanking new and not ready.
Das Gemüse - Vegetables
Nicht die Bohne wert sein/ To not be worth a bean –> Not worth a penny
Dieses alte Zeug ist keine Bohne wert.
This junk is not worth a penny.
Bohnen in den Ohren haben/ To have beans in one’s ears -> When somebody doesn’t listen/hear (on purpose)

Are you deaf?
Die dümmsten Bauern haben die größten Kartoffeln/ The dummest farmers have the biggest potatoes – Fortune favours fools.
Jemanden zwiebeln/ To 'onion' someone ->
To treat somebody harshly.
Du hättest es sehen sollen wie sie ihn gezwiebelt hat!
You should have seen how she let him have it!
Flinte ins Korn werfen To throw the shotgun into the corn -> To throw in the towel.
Sie hatte genug und wollte die Flinte ins Korn werfen.
She had had enough and wanted to throw in the towel
Die Radieschen von unten betrachten - To observe the radishes from below -> To push up the daisies (to be dead).
Jemandem ist die Petersilie verhagelt / Somebody’s parsley was damaged by hail -> You look as though you lost a buck and found a penny.
Das hat ihm die Petersilie verhagelt.
That totally destroyed him.
Den Salat haben/ To have the salad -> To be in a fix/jam
Da haben wir den Salat.
I told you so!
Durch Vitamin B kriegen / To get through vitamin B -> To get something through connections.
Ich habe meine gegenwärtige Arbeitsstelle durch Vitamin B bekommen.
I got my current employment through connections.
