General Definition: to be able to

The verb können is a very versatile verb in German as it is in English. Since it is a modal verb, it is used in a variety of ways to express the speaker’s intentions. Many of its meanings parallel those in the English language, others are not quite the same. Below you will find a handful of these different nuances, followed by the verb’s conjugation.

The Different Nuances of können:

To be able to: In the physical sense
Ich kann gut Klavier spielen. (I can play piano very well.)
Ich habe nicht kommen können. (I was not able to come.)

To know how to/ To know:
Der Tourist kann Deutsch. (The tourist knows German.)

The equivalent to 'could’ or ‘may’ when making a request:
In German both the present and the subjunctive form may be used as well.

Kannst du mit mir gehen? (Can you go with me?)
Könnten Sie das bitte wiederholen? (Could you repeat that please?)
Frau (Lehrerin), kann ich bitte zur Toilette gehen? (Mrs. [teacher], may I go to the washroom?)

To express a probability:
Das kann sein. (That’s a possibility. )
Das kann sein, dass er heute Abend nicht nach Hause kommt. (It is possible that he won’t come home tonight.)

Expressions with können:
Er kann nichts dafür. (He can’t help it.)
Das kann nicht sein. (That can’t be true.)
Du kannst mich. (Get lost!)
Darauf kannst du dich verlassen! (You can count on that!)
Können vor Lachen (To want to be able to do something, but not able to due to circumstances.)
Man kann alles, wenn man (nur) will. (When there is a will there’s a way.)


Conjugation of können:

Remember that können as with most other modal verbs follow a similar pattern to that of strong verbs. Also the first and third person singular are always identical. (Except for sollen.)
