'Die Knef' - Hildegard Knef

In Germany she was best known as simply "die Knef." Hildegard Knef (1925-2002) was a versatile performer who even had a brief Hollywood career and also starred on Broadway. Her distinctive smoky singing voice made her a great European chanteuse. She gained further fame as the author of several books, including her bestselling autobiography Der geschenkte Gaul (The Gift Horse, 1970; see photo).
