Annette von Droste-Hülshoff - Part 2

Droste-Hülshoff - Rezeption
In an 1843 letter to a friend, Annette von Droste-Hülshoff wrote: "Ich mag und will j e t z t nicht berühmt werden, aber nach hundert Jahren möcht ich gelesen werden." ("I don't wish or want to become famous now, but I'd like to be read in a hundred years.") She never could have imagined just how popular she would become in the 150-plus years following her death. She never sold more than 2000 copies of her works during her lifetime, but her 200th birthday in 1997 was cause for tributes of many kinds. She was known by only a small literary circle at the time of her death in 1848, but today die Droste is one of Germany's best-known and respected literary figures—a fact confirmed by the many organizations and Web sites devoted to her.

The literary and historical interpretations of her work have undergone constant change over the years. Her recognition began to grow around 1879 when Annette's old love, Levin Schücking, published a three-volume collection of her works. Later her letters were also published. During the Nazi era, although her books were neither burned nor banned, Droste-Hülshoff was not particularly in favor. But after the war, her 150th birthday in 1947 brought her more popularity and attention. With the growth of the women's liberation movement in the 1970s, die Droste became a symbol of a successful woman in a male-dominated society. In 1997 the poet's 200th birthday was the occasion for a special traveling Droste-Hülshoff exhibition that was seen in Münster, Berlin and Düsseldorf.
