Song Lyrics from the “4630 Bochum” CD
Herbert Grönemeyer - Alkohol (English)

NOTE 1: The original German lyrics are copyright Herbert Grönemeyer. They are provided for educational use only. No infringement of copyright is implied or intended.
NOTE 2: This English translation by Hyde Flippo is only intended to aid students' understanding of the German. It is more literal than poetic.

BACKGROUND

This is one of the few songs on his many albums, for which Grönemeyer did not write the lyrics himself. The music and words are by Gaggy Mrotzek and Norbert Hamm, both members of Grönemeyer's band.

ALKOHOL (English translation)

Once again we've turned night into day
I have breakfast at eight in the evening
thoughts flow as slowly as chewing gum
my head's as heavy as lead, my knees are shaking

Mumbled vows in red-blue light
forty percent balance
gray cells in a soft explosion
sunrise and sunset vision

What is the matter here, what happened?
I was just massaging my nerves

Alcohol
is your emergency paramedic
Alcohol
is your parachute and your lifeboat
Alcohol
is the tightrope on which you stand
Alcohol, alcohol

The posh set dreams of cocaine
and in the school toilet it smells of grass
the pharmacist takes Valium und speed
and when it gets dark, they reach for a glass

What is the matter here, what happened?
I was just massaging my nerves

Alcohol
is your emergency paramedic
Alcohol
is your parachute and your lifeboat
Alcohol
is the tightrope on which you stand
Alcohol
is the ship you'll go down with
Alcohol
is your emergency paramedic
Alcohol
is your parachute and your lifeboat
Alcohol
is the tightrope on which you stand
Alcohol
is the dressing for your head salad
Alcohol, alcohol
